Probably Hannah Smith Hoghton’s biological father. All we know about Thomas comes from a census plus his (presumed) daughter’s birth and baptism records:

Name – Thomas Smith; occupation – Labourer; born about 1851 in London and lived in Cheadle in 1891.

His daughter took the name Smith as a middle name all her life; I think she belived that it was from an earlier marriage of her mother’s. She gave John Thomas Hoghton as her father’s name on her wedding banns.
