James Leonard Payne

James Leonard Payne

Ralph’s younger brother James was born in Garbett Street on 26th March 1905 and baptised the following month at St Margarets. He was still in Garbett Street in 1921 when he was working as a “Billiard maker” for Hodgetts of Bull Street. Both his farther and Ralph were out of work; his mother was a Charwoman at the Children’s Hospital in Steelhouse lane.

In 1927 he was at Garbett St with his parents and in Q2 1928 he married Beatrice Winifred Bamford. He registered his sister Marian‘s death in 1930, while he was living at 9 back 209 Icknield Street. For the 1939 register they were at 99 Binstead Road with a son, also James. James Leonard was a “Paper merchant traveller”.

In the May of 1957 James Leonard registered his mother’s death; he was still living at 99 Binstead Road.

In 1965 it gets a bit more interesting. JL was still at 99 Binstead Road, but now with a Frances E Sevcik, not Beatrice. In 1976 there is a probate record for “Payne, Beatrice Winfred or Perrott” which looks like JL’s wife. JL probably died Q4 1978 – the birth year is out by one but everything else fits.
