James Payne

Ralph’s father and the oldest child of another James.

When James Payne was born on 2 June 1876, his father, James, was 22 and his mother, Amelia, was 25. He married a widow, Florence Edwards (nee Jenkins) in August 1902 in Birmingham, Warwickshire. They had six children in 12 years. He died in December 1947 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, at the age of 71.

On 5th August 1902 he married Florence Edwards (nee Jenkins). They both gave their address as 19 Barker Street, which is a few doors down from Florence’s sister Gertrude. The marriage took place in Birmingham Register Office (so either non-conformist ot no religion – probably the former; born out by burials??) Gertrude was a witness at the marriage, along with her future husband Alfred Parry.

By the 1911 census James, Florence, Arthur and Ralph were were living “1 back of 28 Garbett Street” (a recurring theme) with three younger children James, Marion and Florence Amelia. The youngest, Lily Mary, was born August that year.

Everyone apart from Arthur were in the same house ten years later. James senior and Ralph were both out of work; Florence was a charwoman at the Children’s hospital in Steelhouse Lane and James junior was a Billiard maker for Hodgetts of Bull Street.
