Arthur Edwards
Arthur was Ralph’s half brother; the son of Florence Jenkins by her first husband Arthur Edwards.
He was born on 3rd January 1899 in a back-to-back at 14 Stour Street, 7 months after his parents married. He was baptised on the18th January at St John’s Ladywood and his father died of “Acute Catarrhal Pneumonia” on the 17th February.
Two years later, for the 1901 census, he was living with his mother and her parents, three teenage uncles and aunts and a “Boarder”, now at 15 Stour Street. The following year his mother married James Payne and Ralph was born in 1903.
By the 1911 census he had another half-brother and two half-sisters; the family were in a different back-to-back at 1, back of 28 Garbett Street, Ladywood. He wasn’t with his parents fot the 1921 census when he would have been 22; I haven’t found him yet. He would have been 18 before the end of WW1 so possibly in the military?
In 1928 he married May Beatrice Gregory in Birmingham and they seem to have settled in Garbett Street acording to the Electoral Rolls. For the 1939 register they were still in Garbett Street and probably had a child (there is a closed record). Arthur was a Printer’s Paper Warehouseman; May was a colliery(??) cleaner.
It is possible that he died in 1957 in Harborne – but that might be another Arthur Edwards of the same age!
Could add a map / photo of church / look harder for child / electoral roll / death certificate.
